Diversity and Equity–October 2018

For many of us (though not all) the holiday of Halloween is highly anticipated. If you and your family celebrate this holiday, do you know what you’re going to hand out when kids come rapping on your door and yell, “Trick or Treat?” If you leave the lights on for your trick-or-treaters, here are some things you might wish to consider:

NON-CANDY TREATS- Why?

Food Allergies: Food allergies are on the rise and many popular types of candy contain peanuts and other allergens. We have some families within MPS who can’t let their kids trick or treat because of potential allergen exposure.

Dye Sensitivities: Many kids are sensitive to food dyes and it is tough to avoid them in most types of candy.

If you can’t bear not handing out candy on Halloween, also consider

NON-CHOCOLATE or FAIR TRADE CHOCOLATE TREATS

Did you know that most of our chocolate is produced by illegal child labor?

Equal Exchange makes a small fair-trade chocolate bars that are a perfect size to hand out.

Just some food for thought!
